Consumer demand is different today than 100 years ago. The industrial revolution took off making lifestyles better.
At least that is the intent. New innovations and technology advancements serve a major purpose - prolonging life and providing a preferred level of comfort.
When I go camping, I prefer to be in a trailer or tent. I prefer to have cooking gear to make it easier to prepare meals. I prefer to have high end weather gear to stay warm.
Well, humans have survived thousands of years without the things of today. Many people live in a world of convenience and when they are faced with a less preferred circumstance, they panic not knowing how to respond.
With modern day living, a power outage causes high levels of discomfort. I know that there is plenty of room for me to be better prepared for disaster and to praise the efforts of those who serve in disaster related occupations in the private sector and government agencies.
